coconut grove, south beach or key biscayne??
What is your favorite area of miami??
I don't know where to reserve a hotel.
Can you give me pros and cons for each location?
Any one more dangerous then the other??

You have three distinctive areas of Miami:
1. The Young and the Shallow: South Beach. The purpose of life here is a great tan, to be buff, and to get into the clubs (do you really want to do this now?). My husband and I enjoy watching this self-absorbed parade and find it amusing. I am not easily shocked or offended.
2. Key Biscayne: Richard Nixon made this his home. Does this say it all? Probably not anymore. There are some lovely beaches which are not crowded due to the effort involved to come here.
3. Coral Gables: no beaches, good shopping and restaurants and the famous Biltmore. I would say this is more a middle aged destination.
Anywhere is dangerous for those who do not know where they are going. All of these places are safe for smart tourists.

Perfect descriptions LilMsFoodie!!!
But you left off Coconut Grove, which used to be a hip and arty area. Now it is the place for college, beer-drinking kids. I have this on good authority from my great niece who is in college in Miami, but I've also witnessed it first hand.
I guess it depends on what you want. South Beach is "happening" even still, but if you're not a model or a rock star or a similar wannabe, you might be happier in Coral Gables -- fine restuarants, great shopping, and a minimum of "attitude".
Hotels near Bayside might be your best bet for the "cheap" cab ride to the places you mention as it is kind of between them all.

Just a note on Key Biscayne. While it is certainly quiet, I'm not sure what the above poster means by "the effort involved" to get there. From downtown Miami it is closer than South Beach and traffic and parking are much less of a hassle than South Beach. K. Biscayne is really more of an upscale residential community rather than a vacation destination (although there are several nice resorts and the beaches are nice) because there are much fewer restaurants and clubs than the other two destinations alpinemccain asked about. And if you were to stay on Key Biscayne, there I disagree that "anywhere is dangerous for those who do not know where they are going"- Key Biscayne is ultra-safe. As far as the Grove being a destination for beer-swilling college kids, that is true but I'm not sure it is any worse than South Beach. Actually, in terms of out-of-town spring break college kids more of them go to SoBe than the Grove. The Grove is the night-life destination of choice for University of Miami students. As far as safety goes in the Grove and South Beach, there I do agree with LFoodie that it is generally safe but you could wander into some bad areas. As to where to stay, I'm not sure that's really a big deal. Anyone of these locations is a 15-20 minute cab ride away from the other.

On your question about the port, it is a little less than 10 minutes from South Beach and a little more than 15 minutes from Coconut Grove. Iit seems by your question you are going on a cruise and are looking for a hotel to stay in a few nights either before or after the cruise (or both). If that is the case you are only going to go to the port once, twice at the most, and I wouldn't use "proximity to the Port" as criteria for deciding between SoBe, The Grove, Coral Gables, or Key Biscayne; they are all relatively close to the Port.
