Cocoa Beach?
Family (kids 5 & 10)headed to WDW/Orlando in May and looking to drive over to one of the beaches for a day trip. Having never been to Cocoa Beach area, I was wondering if this is good family beach area or is there a better beach area to consider?

I think Cocoa Beach would be fine. And when you are tired of the beach, there is always Ron Jon's! If you did want something a little quieter, Indialantic is a nice beach about 15 or 20 miles south of Cocoa. There is a park called Paradise Park along A1A that has changing facilities.

I agree that Cocoa Beach is a nice place to spend some time and it's only about an hour east of the airport. There's a park at 1500 N. Atlantic Avenue (near the Holiday Inn) called Lori Wilson Park. It's more than 32 acres and right on the beach. There are restrooms, a boardwalk, a playground, grills and a large parking area. (Parking is $1 for cars.)

We did this same trip in 1997 and opted for a couple of days at Cocoa Beach. We weren't thrilled with the area - it's quite tacky and the hotels/beaches are far from the best on this coast. Maybe try a different area ie, New Symrna?

If you don't like the Florida mid-century architecture in Cocoa (which is tacky, that's the style) then you could head up to Ormond Beach which has some newer high-rises and condos, or try some of the better Daytona hotels in the less car-traveled parts of the beach (away from the pier). Or go south to Vero Beach, which is more residential but has some smaller and mid-sized hotels. The old famouse Driftwood Inn is a one-of-a-kind place, but it is a bit rustic.

Since we're only looking at a day trip, I'm really only interested in a clean beach that's good for swimming, playing in the sand, & maybe walking around to some curio type shops. Tacky is ok w/ me as I am one of the few people I know who actually enjoys Venice Beach, CA.
