coastal oregon and portland stay?

we'd be driving from san francisco, en route to portland. can anyone suggest (just to narrow it down for me) a town and/or small hotel or b & b right on the coast? i want to be right on the water. how about in portland? anyone know the name of the small, homemade pizza place in portland i saw on the travel channel?

Hi otto,
The only coastal Oregon places that I know personally are Arch Cape ( www.inatarchcape.com ) and Cannon Beach ( www.surfsand.com)..Cannon Beach is 90 min ( with no traffic) from downtown Portland, on highway #26..Arch Cape is about 10 miles South of Cannon Beach on highway 101..
Arch Cape has fireplaces in all the rooms and is on the beachside..SurfSand is on the beach..some rooms have fireplaces and there is sooo much to do in Cannon Beach..shops, cafes etc.

My favorite hotel in Portland is the Monaco.
Aside from the Big ones,(Westin, Paramount, Heathman) there are some smaller boutique hotels like the Vintage Plaza and the Lucia and the Inn at Northrup Station.

Pizza..homemade...the ones I know of..
Hot Lips
Kens Artisan Pizza
Old Town ( haunted pizzaria)
for greasy heartburn pizza, Escape from New York..

and from the Travel Channel it might have been over on the eastside..
I cannot remember the name lol
look at www.portlandfood.org
They talk food all day and all night

Good luck, enjoy Portland

Do you want suggestions for places en route? How many nights will you be taking to do the trip? I'd advise at LEAST 2, but more if you can. Trinidad and Yachats would be good places to break up the trip if you just have 2 nights--the Lost Whale B&B and the Overleaf, respectively. Both are on cliffs overlooking the ocean but you can walk to beaches from either.

Yup, Apizza Scholls supposedly makes the best in town. Couldn't say myself, though; anytime I've gone the line's been out the door.

I agree with NWWanderer's suggestion of breaking the drive into three days, if you've got time, and Overleaf Lodge is probably the best situated lodging on the entire Oregon coast. Just breathtaking scenery.... Again, if you've got the time, travel from there up the coast to Cannon Beach on day 3 before heading into Portland.
