Coastal Carolinas in summer

We are a mid thirties couple planning a trip to either NC or SC this summer. Need somewhere relatively children-free, & romantic. Like the beach but do not want to veg out all the time. We do play golf, and would like walks and sightseeing. Good restaurants essential. Any suggestions?

We live in Wild Dunes, which is just about 25 minutes from downtown Charleston, SC. There will be some kids, but not an over-abundance. There are tennis courts (ranked in the top 10 US), 2 Tom Fazio golf courses.

Charleston is definitely one of the most romantic cities with its history tours, carriage rides, and so many wonderful restaurants.

Check out:

There's also Seabrook and Kiawah resorts on the south side of the Charleston area.

Enjoy...

Try the Outer Banks of NC. Duck in particular. While most is rental house property with children, The Sanderling Inn definitely sounds like what you're looking for. First class hotel with all the amenities and luxuries. Walking trails and the Atlantic right at your door. Have fun.

charleston, sc, is beautiful and romantic. it's convenient to beaches and golf, the city itself is perfect for long walks, the restaurants are amazing and there's a very active arts scene.

wilmington/wrightsville beach might be a good second choice. if charleston is a 10, wilmington is an 8.

Hilton Head Island, SC. Stay at Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Villas available at www.coastalhhi.com we stayed in the Lake Forest ones. This is an area not dedicated to Children. Has a nice beach, world class golf. Is 45 minute from Savannah Georgia which is a romantic Southern old city with hanging moss from the trees and old mansions. Very nice. Lived there for 8 years.
