Fargo is a 3-hour drive from Winnipeg. Minneapolis is 8hrs or so drive from Winnipeg. That probably translates to 4 and 10 hrs. by bus. Depends what kind of airline you're on and how tight the schedule is.
If you're somewhere near the canadian border anyway, look at the Westjet.ca web site. They have pretty good rates... and fly to lots of cities near the US border. (Vancouver is 2 hrs from Seattle, Hamilton is less than 2 hrs from Buffalo, etc.) Don't forget the Canadian dollar (a.k.a. "northern peso" ) is about $1.60 to the real dollar, so airfare is cheaper than it looks.
