In 1997 I went to Peru the day after Christams. I left late in the day so the airport was very quiet. Although typically the day after Christmas the airport is a madhouse!
I went hiking in the Andes so in the mountains it was cold at night & we had some rain.
I LOVED being away for the holidays. With my disfunctional family I wish I could go away every year from Thanksgiving until after the New Year!

I arrived in Thailand on Dec. 26 a few years ago, late at night. The tsunami was that morning. The tsunami was quite dramatic, of course, though I wasn't directly affected by it. I thought I might not like traveling at that time, since so many people travel at that time, but I liked it.
Will be in New Zealand this Christmas with my brother. Should be warm, sunset at 8:40PM or so. Nice long summer days.

Since we moved overseas 7 years ago, we have spent every holiday season traveling somewhere. When the kids were younger, we waited until the day after Xmas to leave. Now that they are teenagers, we don't mind traveling over Xmas since we are still spending time together. We've done Salzburg, a Kenya/Tanzania safari, skiing in France, New Zealand, Germany, South Africa, and (this year) Italy.
In New Zealand, we met up with 2 other families we knew and had a great Xmas dinner together! Quite fun!
It's sometimes tough on Xmas and NY day since so many things are closed, but we've learned to work around that and often use those days as travel days.
It would be nice to be back in the US with our families, but since they are spread 1500 miles apart - the logistics are just too much. But we have so many fun memories of the time the 4 of us have spent together....it almost makes up for it.
