Christmas holidays in Savannah
My sister and I are thinking of driving our 85 year old mother to Fl. to visit relatives after Christmas. Would Savannah be a good place to break up the trip from Virginia? Is there any xmas tradition that we might want to know about? We will be passing through right around New Years Day. Thanks very much!

It's a nice time to see the city as all the squares are decorated. The city provides the materials, garlands of real pine boughs and bolts of red ribbon, then the residents of each square get together the 1st or 2nd Saturday of December and decide how they want to decorate their square that year. The results are beautiful in their simplicity--nothing garish.
My husband and I volunteered to do one of the commercial squares, Wright Square, and I must have made 50 enormous bows over a two day period. We wrapped all 4 light poles within the square with pine garlands anchored by bow at the top, and did garland swags on the wrought iron fence surrounding the statue, each swag anchored by another bow. As every square is different in design from the others, so are the decorations, so it's fun to see each of them.
Interestingly, despite the number of residents and tourists coming through the squares, the decorations never vandalized, though they were easily accessible to anyone who wanted to take anything.

Olive - Thanks so much for describing Savannah at Christmas. I was hoping you would see my post. As I recall from other messages, you lived in Savannah for quite some time so I will assume that you have traveled alot in the southeast. Have you been to Charleston SC during the holidays? Perhaps we should stop there on our way back to No. VA in early January?

Theresa,
No, we never got up there during the holidays, but absolutely, it's a great stop on your return trip. The two cities, though similar, are quite different. Charleston's historic district is more citified than Savannah's, and their restaurants are far better, as is their shopping.
You'll enjoy comparing the two. I happen to prefer Charleston. My brother and his family, when visiting both, preferred Savannah. Whatever, those stops will round out your FL trip, giving you something else to anticipate both going and coming.

We have spent a few Christmas Holidays outside Charleston, in Mt. Pleasant where our daughter lived. If you stop there, be sure to go to James Island and drive through the park. It is decorated with lights and scenes, there is a gift shop with hand made items, hot cocoa, etc. Lots of fun. Charleston is a lovely city any time of the year.
