Choosing a Broadway Play
We'll be in New York in early May and will be able to see just one play. I've called Telecharge and inquired about The Producers, but the only seats I can get are up in the balcony, fourth row, way over on the side. There's also seats available on the mezzanine, midway back on the side. I'd like to see this play, but what do you think of these seats? I'm not in the position to pay broker's fees, so don't even suggest it.
If you were in my shoes, would you see The Producers regardless of the seating arrangement, or would you choose another play? There are so many good shows to see in New York and I don't want to obsess about this one unnecessarily. In the past, we've had fun going to the TKTS booth and being spontaneous.

My tickets to The Producers aren't until mid May, but from all the hype, I'd say go for it. The St. James is not a huge theatre. There are 20 rows in the orchestra and only 16 in the mezzanine. The first row of the mezzanine overhangs the 9th row of the orchestra (pretty close) so if you can get tickets mid way in the mezzanine (say 8th row) that's over the 17th row downstairs. I'd jump at those mezzanine seats over anything in the orchestra 11th row or further back --I hate being under the mezzanine where the sound just sort of muffles. It is also not terribly wide and once you are in the mezzanine, your sightlines will be very good from a side section, unlike side seat down close to the stage. Incidentally, you can look at any seating chart and/or print it off for reference by going to www.playbill.com

Patrick is absolutely right in his advice. Grab the mezzanine tickets immediately! You'll have no problem seeing the show. We sat in the orchestra (row 17) on the right and had no problems!
(P.S.: To Patrick, there was no muffling of the sound from our seats!)

If you cannot get tickets to The Producers look into Proof with Mary Louise Parker. It was wonderful- We saw it in October the week before it opened on Broadway and it was getting rave reviews. Since it was newer there were more tickets available. We have since had other friends see it and really enjoy it. Good Luck!

Jeanne,
Have you grabbed the mezzanine seats yet? If not, do so. If they're not available, take what you can get.
We just saw it last night, and were in the second row balcony, all the way to the right. The view was a bit obstructed, but the play was so great that I didn't really mind. If you were higher in the balcony, you'd in fact be a bit better off.
It's very funny, and the acting and sets are superb. See it you must.
We waited outside the stage door for 20 min. or so and were lucky enough to see both Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The kids got the latter's autograph--he was very kind and gracious. A wonderful experience for us all.

By the time I got around to making up my mind, not only were the mezzanine seats gone, we even lost out on those fourth row balcony seats, so it's almost all the way back for us (second row from the wall, aisle seats, center section @$30 each.) It's comforting to know that we might actually have a view. I hear that this play is so funny that after the first 15 minutes you forget that there's no place to put your feet. We're looking forward to it, no matter what. Thank you, everybody, for your encouragement.
