Choices for Broadway theatre?

My husband and I will be in NYC for four days in May (Monday-Thursday) and would like to see two or three shows. Our first choice is currently Cabaret, but I'm having a hard time picking anything else from the reviews I'm finding online. We'd like to see one musical and maybe one other more dramatic choice -- any recommendations?

Also, we will be flying into JFK from different airports and need to find a place to meet at the airport. Any ideas?

Many thanks!

For musicals, I really liked "Contact". On a more d"ramatic side, I just saw "Copenhagen which had wonderful acting AND was very "wordy" so you have to be in the mood. Also, I liked "Dinner With Friends" if you want to see something off-Broadway.

"Kiss Me Kate" has gotten raves from friends, as has "Aida" (Kate probably has more universal appeal...)

"Rose" is opening with Olympia Dukakis - I haven't seen "The Lion King" because it's so tough to get tickets - but people who have seen it have loved it.

Good luck - and have a great time...

Second the nomination for "Contact" (at Lincoln Center); a more dramatic but still musical choice would be "The Dead," based on the James Joyce story and getting raves. For a play, "True West" is also getting raves. Remember, no theater on Mondays, but there are Wednesday Matinees.

If you like dancing, then put "Contact" at the top of your list. It's one of the most original and creative shows to hit Broadway in years....but see it only if you like dancing.
Unfortunately, "The Dead" is closing soon.
"Kiss Me Kate" is another solid choice. Very, very entertaining. Also, if you haven't yet seen "Chicago," it's also one of the best.
As for straight plays, "True West" is worth seeing, as is off-Broadway's "Dinner with Friends."
For all of the above, I would recommend getting tickets in advance. If you want phone numbers for ordering, let me know.
You also should check out the Playbill website (www.playbill.com) and join. It doesn't cost anything and you can get tickets for some shows at discount prices. Since you're going midweek to the theater, you might luck in on discount tickets. However, the offers usually aren't available this far in advance.
P.S.: You've made a wise choice in Cabaret.

I just got tickets for Lion King on exactly the night I wanted throught the Web. Price was more but I don't want to waste my time in NYC. I have heard that it is the must see right now. If you like good music and history "Les Miserables" is still around. Would be a good choice if you have never seen it.
I'm going in May too. Can't wait.

Beg, borrow or steal to see Lion King. It's fabulous. I haven't seen Les Mis on Broadway, but it's one my all time favorite musicals.

You'll have fun, no matter what you see. New York is great.

I can't say enough about Cabaret; wonderful music and dancing, but also a powerful message. We have friends who saw "Aida" last weekend and were pleasantly surprised; I guess the lead (Heather ?) is outstanding; standing ovation at the end of the performance for all.

Just returned from seeing 7 shows in 5 days. Saw Cabaret last year, and it still might be #1 for me. Kiss Me Kate is wonderful -- a superb production! Aida is not my cup of tea -- I don't understand the screeching high pitch sound of songs coming from a male lead who is supposed to be the epitome of masculinity and strength, but Heather Headley is wonderful as is the second female lead who really could steal the show--a Pharoh's daughter played as a cross between Marilyn Monroe and a valley girl. But overall it is probably the most stunning show I have ever seen --and I have seen a lot of them. The totally creative, but fairly simplistic sets integrated with unbelievable lighting and some outrageous but effective costuming all blend together to make a true spectacle, perhaps even more so for me than Lion King. I was disappointed in Contact. It was indeed clever and creative, but I found the second and third sequences too long and repetitive. I thought the third sequence would never really start. But who am I to argue with all the critics. Chicago is still far more exciting to me as a "dance" show, although it is, of course, far more than that. Off Broadway, Wit is simply overwhelming! And from what I hear, the new revival of The Music Man, may really be a top notch revival of a classic musical, but it will be hard to top Kiss Me Kate.
