Chicago to Portland drive March 1

Hi,

We (2 women in 40s) are driving a 4 door Lexus Hybrid Sedan from Chicago to Portland. We are in no rush, but would like to make around 5 days, leaving March 1st.

Which route would you suggest?

90w IL-WI-MN-SD-MT-ID-WA-OR

80/84w IL-IA-NE-WY-UT-ID-OR

Do we need tire chains either way?

If we go the 90w route, should we detour and drive through Yellowstone NE entrance to N entrance?

Our preference is 90w for the more scenic route, but we aren't sure how the weather has been this year and which option would be better in regard to snow, ice, and/or wind.

Any advice, places to stop, stay, eat, etc...., would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks!!! =-)

The answer is "it depends" that time of year. No help, I know. Just check weather as you go and be flexible, including willingness to stop until it improves, if necessary.

Regarding Yellowstone, most of the park is closed for the winter so check on the park website to see what's available to you, if anything. I was there in late September and the northern entrances were closing.

Is there something either of you has to do in Portland on Monday March 6?
If the tires are in good shape (tread/pressure) you should be fine with either route you take but don't expect to see much if any of Yellowstone.

I-80 is fairly bland all the way to Wyoming whereas for I-90 WI is pretty as is SE MN (highlight is Mississippi valley), then dull till the Black Hills.

Instead of Yellowstone I believe Grand Tetons NP is always open.

Craters of the Moon is interesting in Idaho.
