Chicago to Milwaukee
Planning a trip on amtrak to chicago. I would like to go to milwaukee as well to catch a baseball game. Whats the best way to get there? Train? bus? Cab? Also, I need a good kid friendly hotel near union station (kids are 3 and 21 months).

What else are you planning in Milwaukee? If you're looking to explore a little, it might make more sense to rent a car so you can get around easier. Public transit in Milwaukee is not as good as Chicago. The drive between the 2 cities should take 1.5-2 hours at most, unless you run into horrible traffic.

Price range...maybe $200.00 per night is the most I'm going to pay....since i spent $280 per night at the opryland hotel in Nashville and thought it was a rip off!! My plan is to take the grandparents and let them watch the kids as we sneak off to a Brewers game...I'm trying to plan this around the Ringo Starr concert in June.

From my experience going to Brewer's games, I think you might need a car that end. Overall, it's going to cost you plenty for cabs doing this.
I would rent a car myself- because the bus, cab, train connections are more frequent and each leg is costly. And that's not even considering the kids' equipment and comfort zone factors.

"Sounds like the train is best??"
I guess it depends on how much money you want to spend and how much you're willing to depend on taxis, buses, etc. It looks like a roundtrip from Chicago to Milwaukee on Amtrak is $40. I don't know if they charge for kids, but with 4 adults that's at least $160, plus cab or bus fare once you get to Milwaukee. You could easily rent a car or mini-van for way less than that and not have the hassles. The grandparents could drop you off at the park (or close by) and then if you've been drinking either take a car, bus, or get somewhere so they can pick you back up.
I just think if you're going up to Milwaukee for a quick visit, relying on the train/bus/cab will take up too much time and money for the amount of time you're spending there. If it were a longer visit, maybe it would make sense.

You have six people, so assume you need two rooms. For what you are looking for (Ringo Starr concert in Rosemont (O'Hare area) and a Brewers game, you would get a lot more for your money if you look outside of downtown Chicago. Milwaukee itself is a good bargain and has a nice downtown.

Where is a good kid friendly hotel. We might be crazy for taking two little ones on the train in the first place!! It appears to be 7 and a half hours from KC to Chicago. And aside from the ballgame any suggestions on where to take children? They are def. not going to the ballgame or concert...thats the reason for taking the grandparents.

The train will get you from Chicago to Milwaukee, but then you will need to get to Miller Park and back. Best bet would be to rent a car in chicago, get a hotel by Miller Park and then drive back to Chicago when you choose to.

The Chicago Hilton at 720 South Michigan would be kid friendly. It's right across from the park and museum campus. Look for their double room with two bathrooms - these were converted from a pair of single rooms and have a nice amount of space.

You could leave the kids and grandparents in Chicago and they could go to Brookfield Zoo for the day. It is a really nice zoo.

I figured this $$ out. Unless money is no object, the legs just add up to a phenomenal sum all told for what you are doing.
I also hope you have enough time evolved to make these scattered happenings worth it.

Normally we would have went to Vegas for 3 nights and dropped $3,000 plus (unless we win which we never do) so I'm not worried about the cost of this trip. I don't think it will be a hassle..we can do all of this in 3 days. I'm a big Billy Squier fan and he is playing with Ringo..otherwise I wouldn't go.

We live in the Milwaukee area. Based on info in this thread I would probably opt to rent a car in Chicago and drive to Milwaukee. Not only is it the cheapest but also the most
convenient, There are some nice motels west of the Stadium with easy access to Miller Park. Doubletree has a nice place on Bluemound Rd in Brookfield.Price range around
$100/ night. They have a child friendly program. Haven’t stayed there because, of course,we live here, Check out there Website for more information. Keep in mind the Brewers are home the weekend of June 3 and June 17. Glad to help with local knowledge of the Milwaukee area.

One other consideration would be that the trains that travel from KC to Chicago are typically LATE. I live in a town "along the tracks on that route" and I know, for certain, that delays are common. I have a window view of the Amtrak station and I know what times the trains are SUPPOSED to be arriving. (smile)
