Chicago Restaurants and Bars?

I will be in Chicago this weekend for business and need some suggestions on restaurants and bars to check out that are not too expensive (company budget). I will be staying at the Residence Inn on Walton off of Lakeshore- I think this is considered downtown? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Hi Wendy - we'll need more information from you as to what kinds of restaurants and bars you like before making recommendations. Chicago is an awfully big city with roughly a gazillion great restaurants and bars. Plus, would you like to be in close proximity to your hotel (which, by the way, is in a very nice area), or are you willing to venture out into different areas that might require a cab ride or riding public transportation? For now, you can check out www.metromix.com. But then re-post with more particular info, and I bet you'll get some good information.

Shasson, very good suggestions! Thank you. I will be mainly using cabs so the closer the better. Also I love all types of food and especially am interested in things that a city is known for. As far as bars go I like jazz and those type of cocktail bars and also good/fun pubs. I'm early 30's and from Seattle so really enjoy music!

I went to Chicago last month and enjoyed eating at Berghoff's very much. It's a German restraunt on Adams, just down the street from the Art Institute. Berghoff's is a Chicago institution established in 1898! I also found it very reasonably priced.

For jazz bars, go to Andy's early in the evening or Jazz Showcase later on. They're in the same neighborhood, about 1 mile SW of your hotel. If you're adventurous try the Green Mill, far north side. Metromix has lineups and addresses.

You might like to try Heaven on Seven, Bistro 110 or Cafe Spiaggia for good food at not-too-expensive prices. All are within walking distance of Walton Street (although that definition does depend on the weather.)

Like to see live bands? Go to Schubas on Southport and Belmont in Lincoln Park area. All sorts of bars and great restaurants in area. Need to take cab--$15 each way. Check out the local newspaper: The Chicago Reader--should be online @ Chicagoreader.com.

Heaven on Seven has a counter (lunch counter type) which I think you will feel comfortable. Its not the bar so you won't have to worry about someone who is just sitting there drinking trying to strike up a conversation.
