Try this place for accommodations when in Chicago. http://www.justpassingthrough.com It's a really great bargin. You get an apartment instead of a hotel room for the same price. It's like visiting a friend's place or having your own apt. in the city. You can walk to trains or buses and get anywhere fast. Ask for an apt on a high floor for great views of lake Michigan or for the studio apartment downtown close to everything on Michigan Avenue and Oak Street Beach. Some of the city's best restaurants, shopping and entertainment are easy walking distance from their downtown apt. For eats try Iberico for inexpensive Spanish tapas near downtown on LaSalle Street. You should visit in the spring, summer or fall when weather is tolerable. Lots of festivals, and free concerts and activites happen during the summer. Favourite place is at the top of the John Hancock building for Sunday brunch. U can see the whole city/lake and everything from 95 stories up. Or go up 1 more floor just for a drink. Less crowded and less costly than going to the observation deck. Buy a transit pass when you arrive for unlimited travel on trains and buses for 2, 3 or 5 days. Don't miss the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Symphony or Lyric Opera. Hope this helps. Enjoy your visit to Chicago.

Just a quick suggestion ... I think taking one of the boat rides (Wendella is one of the companies) down the Chicago River and out onto Lake Michigan is great fun. It's a nice way to get away from the hustle & bustle of the city and still see sights like Navy Pier, the skyline & Buckingham fountain. If you follow Marc's suggestions about staying on the "Gold Coast" you'll be very close. Go down the stairs at Michigan Ave. & the river by the Wrigley Building to catch a boat.
