Cheapest way into Manhattan

Hi Budget Traveler,
I take the M60 bus and change for the subway "N" line into Manhattan. It is very quick and very easy and I do it all the time. It is not a hassle at all if you don't have a lot of luggage. The N train will take you into Midtown Manhattan. If there are two of you it will cost a total of $6 going into Manhattan and $3 returning to the airport (if you use a Metrocard on the way back the transfer is free, hence the price difference.) Have fun.

I can not believe all the big spenders. Poor Budget Traveler asked for cheapest method. Pure and simple it is the bus. Even without a metrocard, "Budget" can get anywhere in Manhattan for $1.50, by requesting a transfer when boarding the m60 bus, and making the correct transfer. "Budget", if you are traveling with baggage that will fit "under the seat", you can easily take public transportation.Anyone who insists on cab should offer to "HelpThePoor" by picking you folks up. daBus, daBus, daBus! but I would use the subway as several others suggested. daBus, daBus!

FrugalFred,
Just to clarify, i don't think a transfer obtained on the bus (obtained by using cash and asking the driver for a transfer) entitles the user to use the subway for free. I THINK that the transfer is only good on another bus (unlike a MetroCard, which allows you to transfer from bus to subway at no charge).

ThereUAre is correct, and that's what I meant, a bus-bus transfer. Two that come to mind are M102? Catch it from 125th & Lexington?/Park? or the Broadway bus (#??) if u stay on M60 until it ends. It's the cheapest, but a VERY inconvenient way. I would opt for the subway to get downtown, even if I had to pay the extra $1.50 The system successfully moves millions of people a day, cheaply, and "Budget Traveler" should give it a try and use the savings for other entertainment.
