I'm looking to go to Maui at the end of October and stay for about 9 nights. I was wondering if I should go ahead and purchase my tickets now or if there may be a sale for Hawaii coming up soon that I should wait for.

No better site I know of than clarkhoward.com. If you're not familiar with him, he's our local consumer advocate. His website posts DAILY travel deals...not just flights either. I check his travel tips page daily in case a good deal pops up!

We will be making our third trip to Hawaii in Feb. and make our arrangements through an agent in New Orleans. We have tried to beat his prices, but just can't, especially flying from Va. You pay $199 R/T (per person) for a voucher for two people, $398. You have to book a week through him to get these rates and once your package is paid for, you get voucher for free airfare on your next trip to Hawaii, Bahamas, etc or you can sell the voucher (which is how we got ours) to someone else for no more than $199 per person ($398 a couple) He will get you several options to pick from and works to get the price range you can be comfortable with. how come you don't mention the price that this guy charges you for your week in the hotels?

We are spending a week in our timeshare exchange when we first get there.
He has booked us for 5 nights in the Maui Islander (studio) then 4 Islander on the Beach in Kauai.
The price includes accomodations, hotel takxes, airline taxes, peak season surcharge,courier flight(between Maui and Kauai, $420)...$2,768.

Correction: $2,548.

Do you realise what a dump the Maui Islander is? Is there only two of you taking this inter-island flight? We just paid $62.00 a piece for our flight from Honolulu to Maui. Do a hotel review and a text search here for your hotels. You will learn a lot. I wish you well, but remember, you get what you pay for.

Isn't the Islander on the Beach on Kauai a dump as well? Oh well at least they'll be in their nice timeshare to begin with. Neither of the hotels you list are worth the money you are paying.

How hilarious, "peak season surcharge" in October!!!!! The total off seaason of all off seasons!

I looked up your two hotel choices and found that you can get a studio at Mauiislander with a car for $116 per night. The Islander on the beach can be had for way less than $100 per night. If you went through discounters you'd get both cheaper. Let's see we're up to maybe $900. Then there is about $240 for round trip between the islands so let's say when all said and done (fees and taxes, etc.) you'd be looking at $1500. That's still $1000 less than your guy quoted for these two dumpy hotels. Of course if you're not free to use those airline vouchers without his assistance I guess that's where it all equals out isn't it. Nothing's free even when it looks free.

Sorry, my mistake.

The time of year we are going is peak season, Feb. and we're flying from Va., so keep in mind that airfare is more expensive when flying from the East coast.
We have stayed in the Maui Islander twice before, know it's a budget hotel and we have a studio reserved. Our last trip, we stayed 11 days there and it has been remodeled since. I have talked to other travel agents and they said to go with what I have, even the one that books for Aston Hotels. When we go to Hawaii it's not to sit in the hotel all day, we stay busy, so why pay megabucks for a room that we only sleep in? The Maui Islander is far enough from downtown Lahaina, that it's quiet at night and close enough that I can get my hubby to take late night walks, We live way in the country and without street lights, night walks are just not done. We usually spend the day out, shower and walk into town for dinner and window shopping. Our beds were made, bathrooms cleaned, fresh towels and floors vaccummed everyday, so what more do I want them them to do? Oh, we've never seen roaches!!
As for the Islander on the Beach, we had friends check the place out for us when they went. They paid more where they stayed and were not happy. Before I committed to the place, I checked with other postings here and other websites, like Frommers, and found other people to be totally happy with the place, as well as the service.
My husband's co-workers have booked numerous trips through this agent because they couldn't find a better deal either.
One big factor, he's there if a problem comes up. He doesn't take your money, then leave you hanging. He has traveled extensively and can give us first hand knowledge of places we are interested in, not just someone who can only tell you what the computer says.
The fact that we booked in the spring, only had to pay a deposit and have til Jan. to save, is a big plus for us.
Again, we spend very little time in our room and I'd rather put my money elsewhere.
I did an individual break down and it came out more, even with the courier flight being less. I don intend to question about that.
I appreciate any constructive advice or suggestions. X, where is the site for the Maui Islander at that rate for a studio in Feb. 2003 and in Kauai?
