Cheap tickets!
Where are the cheap tickets we were promised at the end of January? I am searching and cannot find a bargain anywhere. First choice Kauai, second choice, Rome..I've been to Priceline, Hotwire, Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz. Does anyone have another place to look? Thanks, Sharon

One of the things that's happened to the ticket situation is significantly fewer flights.
If USAir, for example, used to have 20 flights a day from BWI to MIA, they might now have 15. Same goes for all airlines, across the spectrum.
The airlines have been hemorrhaging money. It started before 9/11, with a slowing economy. The tragedy just accelerated it.
The airlines are running leaner and meaner. We gotta learn to live with it.

I usually buy thru the travel sites. You're right there doesn't seem to be a lot of deals out (save to London). I've been watching fares since after the holidays as I expected some good seat sales to come out...the sale prices are even higher than buying on-line, a week before travelling during Christmas week. I did notice in the last week that I can get marginally cheaper airfares ($5 off) directly from the airlines' websites. (I'm scoping for cheap seats BOS to NYC.)

Be sure to read everything carefully at Bestfares...I joined last year before booking seats to Paris. What looked like a real deal at Bestfares involved hours and days of trying to get through on the phone for flights at awful times with terrible (one too short, one too long) connections. All sorts of taxes and fees are added onto those fares Bestfares lists. Direct flights on AA at convenient times were $50 less than Bestfares "deal".
