Pensacola Beach, Navarre, Mexico Beach, Destin, Cape San Blas, and the beaches of south Walton county are my picks for Northwest Florida. I'm not as familiar as the beaches in Southwest Florida, but I have been to both Marco Island and Naples. I was in Naples a few years ago in June, and it was very peaceful, family oriented, and reasonable rates for a suite type motel on the beach.
Check out www.VRBO.com. ( vacation rentals by owner.) I did a serach this summer, and even though it was the low season in southwest Florida, their prices were generally higher than the high season rates for northwest FLorida. However, it is harder to finds cheaper flights to northwest Florida, so that may make a difference. Good Luck and have fun.

Lydia and Meghann,
I think I have the perfect place for you for mid-August. It's a unique, small hotel with a lot of charm, oceanfront on Ocean Isle NC--called The Winds. My wife & I have stayed there several times over the past few years, and we love it.
Here's why I think it's great. In mid-august, Myrtle Beach and even North Myrtle Beach (my new hometown) may be a little too crowded. Also, although MB and NMB are pretty much family-oriented, Ocean Isle is even more so. Ocean Isle is also a lot less developed.
Ocean Isle, in case you're not familiar, is one of a string of barrier islands in the southernmost part of the NC coast (Brunswick County). It's approximately 35 to 45 minutes north of NMB.
Check out the Winds website at www.thewinds.com.
Wherever you go, have a great time!

Hi everyone...me again. I just wanted to say thanks soooo much for all the help everyone gave me. This was the first time I used Fodors, and I am so impressed. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. I really appreciate you all taking the time to give me leads...which I have a lot of! I am beginning my search and will hopefully find something soon. Thanks again!
