lots of places in Waikiki you can walk up and ask the best rate. Unless there is something big going on you should be able to get a car for under 50$ a day. Just walk around and you will come across all sorts of no name places to Avis.

I have no specific experience but there are a few car rental places around central Waikiki. Not sure if it survived the 'remodel' but there was one rent-a-dent on BeachWalk.

I would go with a major though...not much price difference and more reliable. Got to watch those no name prices...advertised price is NOT the end price....lost of fees they only disclose when writing up the contract.

Do you need a place that's open late so that you can return the car that night (what time?) and avoid parking charges at your hotel?

I noticed that most of the Waikiki places close at 2 pm - which ones are open late so that you don't have to pay for hotel parking overnight?

I'd call around to find out what's open late, and I'd and reserve in advance. I don't know about walk-in rates on cars, but for hotels...you can pay *more* as a walk-in, if they even have what you want. Our DS paid $40 at HNL for an 8 a.m.-8 p.m. rental in December -- driving to Pearl with our DGS.
