Charlottesville Family hotel

Any suggestions for a nice, well located, not terribly expensive hotel in Charlottesville for myself, hubby and 10 year old daughter. We like being walking distance to good restaurants. Thanks

Hi! My family and I take overnight trips to Charlottesville as we live within 2 hours and I went to school there. We stay at the Omni hotel which is located at one end of the downtown outdoor "mall". It's a great location because the mall is a brick street now used for pedestrian traffic only. There are a number of excellent restuarants, interesting shops, ice cream places and a theater on the mall and its all within a couple of minutes walk from your room- really fun on a warm spring or summer evening!

While this is different from a typical "family" hotel, two years ago, our family - 2 adults, 2 kids - Stayed at the Inn at the Crossroads in Charlottesville - so we could visit Montecello, etc. This is a bed and breakfast that welcomes children. The Inn was originally a "tavern" or hotel during the early 1800's. We stayed in the "summer" kitchen - terrific little two story bungalow in the back yard. While it was remodeled with all the modern convenienes - The building's achitecture was right out of 1810 - righ down to the latch on the door and the huge "cooking" fireplace. The innkeepers were terrific and the breakfast spectacular. THe innkeeper gave us the full history of the area during breakfast along with a full tour of the beautiful inn. The original "Tavern" was located at an important crossroads for travelers between the blue ridge mountains and Charlottesville. As a result the Crossroads had the two very important entities - A church (where the innkeepers now live ) and a Tavern (or Inn). THe first floor of the Inn has a large meeting room (where the inn-keepers now serve breakfast) where both travelers and Church goers held meetings. I would recommend a B&B (That allows children) in this region over any hotel. This Inn really gave our kids a feeling for the history and actually let them live it for the night!

Whatever you decide your daughter will learn so much on your trip! HAve fun!

If you only want to walk to restaurants, then the Omni is best located (a high rise on the downtown pedestrian mall). However, Charlottesville is so compact that you can drive to most restaurants in 10 minutes. We usually stay at the Hampton Inn (almost new) or the English Inn.

The Omni doesn't have the most fantasic reputation. Try 200 South Street Inn or The Inn at Court Square for a more interesting stay and the same convenient location

Try the English Inn, close proximity to 29 and 250, across from Barracks Rd shopping ctr. Great hospitality, tea at 4, and a wonderful hot breakfast!!! (and really close to the wonder BODO's Bagels)

We stayed at the Boars Head Inn which is a marvelous resort. It is not too far from downtown. The grounds are beautiful and very kid friendly. Minticello, ashlawn, the UVA campus and downtown mall are all kid friendly. Try the Michie Tavern for a historic dinner.
