Charleston, Savannah, and Coast Itinerary

My husband and I are going on a "Babymoon" in March 2016, for 8 days from March 8 to 15. Here are some details:

-We will fly into Charleston in the morning on the 8th and leave from Savannah at night on the 15th. That gives us 7 nights and 8 fullish days.

-We will rent a car.

-I will be 30 weeks pregnant, around the beginning of my third trimester. I typically do well around that time of the pregnancy, but you never know. We will probably leave the day-to-day itineraries more flexible since how much we do will largely depend on how I'm feeling.

-We live in Orange County, CA and want a mix of historical/cultural and relaxing/nature experiences. Food is important to us as well.

-We have never been to any of these destinations and will likely not return to this part of the US for awhile. As such, we want to have a wonderful trip but also hit the major highlights of the area.

I've done some research so far, and want to have a good general itinerary so I can book accommodations. We will figure out a more detailed itinerary later. So far, I would like to...

-Spend enough time in Charleston and Savannah.

-Spend some time exploring some of the area between Charleston and Savannah, staying in Beaufort.

-Go down to the Cumberland National Seashore, but wonder if this is too ambitious for our short trip.

I was thinking of the following:

-3 nights in Charleston: Have 3 full days exploring Charleston. Then, spend a full day driving to Beaufort, making stops along the way and exploring the area

-1 night in Beaufort: Spend a day driving down to St. Mary's, making stops along the way

-1 night in St. Mary's: Stay in St. Mary's so we can make the ferry to Cumberland for a day trip on the island

-2 nights in Savannah: After our day on Cumberland Island, drive to Savannah and finish out the trip there

I would love your feedback! Here are some questions:

-Is this too ambitious for us, pregnancy aside? I typically don't like to make so many short stops, but given all that I want to see I wonder if it is doable.

-Given that I am pregnant, how much do you think it changes things?

-Also, any other considerations would be great as I get deeper into my planning.

Thanks so much in advance!

When in Beaufort do not miss Griffin Market. The best Italian restaurant south of NY City. And a million dollar wine cellar.

Hi there,

I've been to Charleston, Savannah and Beaufort and your itinerary looks like my kind of itinerary. You'll enjoy the historic homes, plantations and forts that abound in the area. As far as historic homes, the Aiken-Rhett House and Nathaniel Russell House I'd recommend in Charleston and the Owens-Thomas House and Isaiah Davenport House I'd recommend in Savannah. The boat ride out to Fort Sumter is something I would highly recommend while in Charleston.

You're in for a treat, both in terms of history and the amazing Low Country & innovative cuisine of Savannah and Charleston both.

Best wishes, Daniel

First, congratulations! I think the low country will be a great babymoon getaway. I did a similar trip this summer, spending around 2 weeks. Honestly, our trip was based entirely off of this article and it was wonderful! We began the trip in Savannah, and drove to Beaufort via Bluffton to visit the pottery studio mentioned in the article, as well as their beautiful wooden church. After Beaufort we visited Edisto Parks and spent a few nights at Folly beach before heading to Charleston where we ended our trip.
