Charleston oysters?
I'm heading to Charleson around Christmas...does anyone have suggestions of where to go for good raw oysters of the half-shell (shucked as you order)? I prefer a more "down-home" type place rather than a 4 star restaurant. Thanks!!

Oysters on the half shell will not be local because ours grow in clusters, not singles.

For local oysters, you want an Oyster Roast or a Half Roast.

I have not been there, because I rarely get to Charleston in oyster season, but everyone on Chowhound.com swears by Bowen's Island. If you go, give us a report!

Red's Ice House over on Shem Creek (in Mt. Pleasant about 15 minutes from downtown) is a fun place for oysters and they usually have live music.

We had a good experience at the Raw Bar at the downtown Boathouse location. Good mussels and oysters!
