Charleston B&B

I'm staying at the Battery Carriage House Inn and the Governor's House Inn early this May. Has anyone stayed at either of these places? Apparently this is the high season, as I had a hard time finding accomodations recently. Also, are there any special events the first weekend in May? We're not sure whether or not to rent a car. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Lorraine: Since I live in the Chas. area, I have never stayed at either of those inns, but have heard raves from others! Yes, April & May are the high season because of the flowers, etc.

Following is a site that you can go to find all of the local sites, schedules, costs, etc...

http://www.charleston.net/entertain/tourist.html

Right before you come down check out http://www.charleston.net Then click on the first down arrow and go to the Preview section (this is the local newspaper site). It will have events for that particular time.

Enjoy!

I stayed at the Battery Carriage House quite a few years ago and it was very nice-it's on the Battery(hence the name)which is several blocks from the main shopping/entertainment area, but still a fairly easy walk. We have often stayed at the Vendue Inn which I like. Check with the Charleston Visitors Bureau about what events will be going on while you're there. The Spoleto Festival starts in late May, I believe. A couple of good restaurants are Magnolias and Carolinas. Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities in America and I'm sure you'll love it.

I know you will love Charleston, My husband and I go every year for our anniversary ( May 1) We have stayed a lots of Inns in the area. We stayed at Battery Carriage house. I was disappointed. It had none of the charm and excellent service we had come to expect in the other Inns in the area. We stayed one year at 2 Meeting Street it was wonderful. We stayed last year at the Jasmine House and found it very nice. These two are just a few we enjoyed there are many great Inns in the area. I don't think you will need to rent a car that is one of the things we enjoy about staying downtown is being able to walk everywhere you want to go. Have a great trip, sound like you will be down the same time we are going back.

Anyone familiar with The Ashley Inn? Is this a safe area at night and is this closer to the Historic area than The Battery Carriage House?

Thanks for the replies. I called several other inns a few weeks ago in search of a room the first weekend in May; everyone was booked. The
Battery Carriage House (which was at least my 20th call) had only one
room left and I jumped on it. The price certainly wasn't inexpensive; is
was comparable to the Governor's House Inn (across from the John
Rutledge House which was totally booked) where we're staying on our
third night. The brochure from the Carriage House looked inviting. How
long ago did you stay there? I've never been to Charleston before and
am looking forward to a romantic weekend.
