I'll be traveling to Vegas with friends next week, and this will be our first time going to a casino. Although I'm familiar with some of the games, I've never actually played any in a casino setting. I was wondering if there is any assistance available at the casinos for newbies, or are most of the games pretty self-explanatory?

Lisa, during the day a lot of casinos will have lessons on particular games. Ask the concierge if he knows which/what/when.

Also until you feel comfortable defiantly play at the lower limit tables ($5) and let the dealers know that your a newbie. If they seem friendly and helpful, stay. If not then find another table quick!!

You better stick with the slots.

There are no instructions for slot machines except on-screen instructions regarding odds and payoffs. However, some casinos offer tutorials on table games, usually early in the morning before the crowds. Ask any pitboss or dealer on the game floor for help. They are usually pretty helpful (not always). For newer games recently introduced there is usually printed literature in the corners of the tables dealing the game. Once in awhile you come upon a dealer who is willing to help you with your play so you can learn the game. I suggest watching others play at first before you start a game you are uncertain of. There are lots of rules in a casino, dealers are not shy about pointing them out to you. Be careful, sometimes breaking a rule can cost you your bet.

Other than slots, I'd reccommend talking lessons before playing anything. Ask the concierge at your hotel which casinos give lessons for the games you're interested in. They should be able to help. Or, call each casino and ask for the "Slot Club". They will be able to tell you when any lesons take place. You have 2 issues like someone pointed out:

1) Knowing the rules
2) Knowing the ettiquette

Each is essential to enjoy yourself and not piss off the other players/dealer/pit boss.

One game you might try is Pai Gow Poker which is played at most casinos now. The dealers will actually play you hand for you, making the best hand you have. You can usually sit and play for a pretty good while without losing (or winning) too much. Check it out.
