Carson City first-timers...where to stay and eat?

My husband and I are traveling to Carson City for work. We'll be there only a day or two. Any suggestions on places to stay and eat? I hear the place in dull and uninteresting? If so, would an outlying city/town be a better bet? thanks, patti

Last week, my daughter stayed at the Best Western Pinon Plaza. The rooms are nice, but then they also have suites (didn't see them)and probably very nice. They are setback from the highway, and from the lobby. It has a grassy area, pool, spa, and sauna. The casino has a bowling alley - but with all Nevada casinos, there is some smoke. The restaurants are getting better in that department!
Other hotels? Maybe someone has another idea, but this is quite popular.

Restaurants - all the casinos. I'm sure you will get suggestions from those around you. Heiss' is a very small intimate restaurant on the street south of the Nugget, few doors from Hwy 395. Cattlemen's (steaks) is 10 miles north of Carson on Hwy 395. All the casinos have restaurants, plus the usual chains in town.

One night you may want to go to Zephyr Cove and go on the dinner cruise on the MS Dixie II at Lake Tahoe. It goes over to Emerald Bay - makes for a very nice evening. I just did that one!

Carson City has an interesting State Museum across the street from the Nugget; a block east is Curry Street with many historic homes; drive east on Hwy 50, and watch the signs for Virginia City, a old mining town;

Lake Tahoe - casinos, Zephyr Cove has boat rentals of all types, Sand Harbor is a great beach; South Lake Tahoe take the Heavenly Valley tram to overlook the lake (near the Marriott); you may not be into Bonanza, but the Ponderosa Ranch at the lake has a breakfast, plus hayride at 8 a.m. Hot Springs in Genoa (nearby).

The Visitor Center located at the Railroad Museum - for maps, and they are very friendly with helpful tips.

Wow! Thanks for the reply...sounds like there are some fun things to do around the area...will check out the Best Western and try out one or two of the restaurants. Thank goodness for Fodor's forum and thank you for your suggestions. Cheers, Patti

I agree with going to Lake Tahoe and taking a cruise on the DixieII. I would also add a trip to Historic Virginia City.

It is a tourist trap but a lot of fun. We saw Mark Twain walking the streets the last time we were there.

It's also where we found this cute little moose!
