Carnivale in Rio

My boyfriend wants to go to Carnivale in Rio next year. I think it would be too crazy and maybe dangerous. Has anyone here ever gone or heard stories about it? I'd appreciate any input.
Thanks!

There's a Latin America forum; you'll probably have more success there with responses than you will here. Hit "Travel Talk Home" and you'll see it.

Whether or not you'll enjoy it has a lot to do with age and prior travel experience. For those who are young, or 'young at heart' who enjoy the atmosphere of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and who aren't beholden to US standards of cleanliness and are tolerant of the older infrastructure of Rio, it can be great fun, and certainly broadens one's horizons regardless of whether you enjoy it greatly or minimally. I can only comment on Rio itself as a destination but not Carnivale (I've only talked to others who have been there at that time).
I don't care for Rio because it's become somewhat tired and run down and I don't travel for the 'nightlife' aspect of things. The beaches are great, the surrounding scenery is beautiful, there are lots of people bugging you for money or trying to scam the unsuspecting Americano, yes there is a real risk of harm if you're away from touristy areas at night but that's true of virtually every big metro area.
So I wouldn't say don't go, just look at what it is you enjoy about travelling and your lifestyle. Some people from the US love Carnivale and Rio in general. It's not my taste, but then I don't even like New Orleans, so that tells you where my tastes lie.

Carnivale can be dangerous. A friend of mine was badly beaten by street thugs while watching a parade during Carnivale 1999. He is still getting the dental reconstruction completed. Now obviously experiences vary, but friends of mine who have experienced Carnivale all say the same thing. 1) They'll never go again. and 2) If friends go, they recommend going in a LARGE group.
Be careful.

Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking I'll try to talk him out of it.

Why don't you consider going to Carnivale in Venice instead of Rio? I hear it is a lot safer, and sure is more romantic!

I'm Brazilian and live in Rio. Carnival time is not more dangerous than any other time of the year. It's a unique party, you won't see anywhere else. Also Rio is one of the most gorgeous cities in the world. But you really have to watch your purse and your belongs and you should not walk alone in desert places, if you are not from here. Sherry's friend was very unlucky. Being bitten in the street is not usual. As to compare Venice's carnival to Rio's carnival, it's impossible. Although I love Venice, the proposals are completely different.
If you have more questions, feel free to e-mail me directly.
PS.: I won't be here for Carnival. I'll be in a Disney cruise.
