Generally, Hertz one way rentals are in the $200/day range. Determine your costs.
Just book the train direct. Simple.
You can drop off baggage at the Seward depot when they open, about 9-10am. Or Alaska Heritage will store it for you.
Kayaking is excellent with Southeast Kayaks out of Ketchikan. http://www.kayakketchikan.com/

BayouGal, Fodor's quoted you on this:
"Now that we're back from our two-week Alaska trip, I can say quite honestly that kayaking in Alaska will not disappoint you. The place is magnificient. My best advice is to bring barrels of money and tons of time!"
Fodor's started a new feature called "Word of Mouth" that's dispersed throughout their guidebooks with quotes from members of this forum. I see Julie304 is quoted a lot in this Alaska book too, and I'm not sure if she has responded to any of my postings.

Good choice for a quote . . . didn't know I had such a way with words! LoL ;-)
BudgetQueen is the ultimate expert here on the forum. Personnally, I think she could write an awesome Alaska guide book, and I've encouraged her to do just that!
