captiva island or sanibel: accomadations
My family will be traveling over spring break to either Captiva Island or Sanibel Island. I have two questions: which one is best for children (ages 10 &15) and what would be some good accomodations on the beach.

Carol, two places on Captiva.
First South Seas Plantation, which is overpriced but a lots to do.
Second, the T'Ween Waters Inn and Marina. This is my favorite. But be sure to book rooms/mini-suites in the new two buildings. A lot of interesting people.

Hi,Carol:My family was on Sanibel in November with our 5 and 10 year olds.
Its a wonderful place, you'll have a great time. I think Sanibel is the place to be with kids. There are extensive bike trails all over the island (not on Captiva) and plenty of places to rent bikes. Plus we found that most of the great family restaurants are located on Sanibel. We stayed at the Sanibel Inn in a two bedroom, two bathroom condo with a screened balcony looking out toward the gulf. The beach front was beautiful. I highly recommend that you give them a call. It is owned by the South Seas Resorts which owns 5 or 6 resorts on Captiva and Sanibel. They have a web site that explains about each one. You can stay at one and use the services at any of the others. While on the islands, the shelling cruises to North Captiva or Cayo Costa are wonderful. Don't miss one. Have a relaxing vacation!

We just returned from 10 days (over the holidays) at South Seas Plantation on Captiva Is. It is an ideallic spot! After Hawaii last Christmas we were worried it might be a let down. We found it perfect for our family. We have boys 10&13 and they were able to roam freely and safely all over the resort. There was plenty to keep all of us happy. It is the perfect family place! Besides taking the many cruises offered from Captiva there is little reason to leave. I did explore all of Sanibel and Captiva and am convinced that we made the right choice. Feel free to email me for more details.

Dear Carol,
My family and I have spent four weeks on Sanibel and Captiva in the past three years. I strongly recommend the Sanibel Moorings as the place to stay. This condominium complex has (if recollection serves) 14 buildings with each of the units individually owned, but run with a central reservation center in the middle of the complex by very nice and efficient people. Most condominium complexes on the island do not have this central system, requiring you to go through the individual owners. The grounds of the Sanibel Moorings have won numerous landscaping awards in competition with the other properties on the two islands. One day per week, the man in charge of the exotic plants conducts a botanic tour of the grounds, explaining many interesting facts about the plants, all of which are individually labeled. One other day per week, they have a large, complimentary breakfast around one of the two pools using fruit grown on their own grounds. Some of the buildings are right on the gulf, some are across the street on the canal, and the rest are in between. Traffic is bad on the island because it has lots of people and no traffic lights, and this gives this place another advantage because it is located near the beginning of the island right through the first stop light, allowing you to avoid lots of traffic. Many restaurants are nearby, and Sanibel has the famous Ding Darling (I swear that is the name) Nature Preserve which takes up nearly one-third of the island. Whether the condo has one, two, or three bedrooms, each unit has a screened-in porch, and each unit must be up to the homeowners' association standards to stay in the rental program. Each condominium in which we have stayed has been immaculately clean inside, a must for me. There are two great bike rental places within a couple of miles, and both deliver to the Moorings if you wish. We learned of this place through our friends who have stayed at this location for 10 years in a row! My brother-in-law has stayed at the upscale South Seas Plantation three of his seven trips, and he and his family enjoy the Sanibel Moorings just as much.

Carol,
By the way, book it soon because the place fills up almost a year in advance for spring break week, but I got in once while trying to book at this time of the year because of a cancellation. They sent me a map of the various buildings and I could see where the unit was located. Have a nice time!
