Cape May, New Jersey

I'm considering taking the ferry from Lewes Delaware to Cape May, New Jersey for one day in mid-April. Particularly interested in going to the lighthouse, and just browsing through the town. Has anyone taken this ferry trip and visited the lighthouse? Just wanted to hear from someone who had and if you enjoyed it.

Thanks!

This summer we were driving south down the coast and after staying in Atlantic City we ventured to Cape May for the better part of the day then took the ferry south to Lewes. The town is quite charming if not overrun by bus tours. Lots of very interesting architecture and the light house is quite striking. The shops and restaurants are typical of any busy little tourist town.

Thank you, Patrick, for your reply. I really am looking forward to this day trip, and especially the lighthouse. Have never been in or near one before. What did you do while on the ferry? Did you take your car or go as a foot passenger? And just curious, how long did it take you to drive from Atlantic City to Cape May?
Thanks again,

Sandi

Cape May is one of my favorite places. The gingerbread houses are beautiful, the shops quaint, and restaurants terrfic - if you do plan to stay one of the B&Bs, of which there are many are wonderful - I believe Cape May has a web site and it seems to me that just about every weekend there is something going on - if you will be there on the weekend. The lighthouse is worth a visit and all around it is a bird sanctuary with trails to walk on - A little farther down from the light house is the tip of land where you can watch a terrific sunset - also look for "Cape May Diamonds" in the sand and if you don't find any you can always buy them in the souvenir shop!!!! If you do plan to go up to Atlantic City I would say it is about a 45-60 min ride from Cape May - you can go on the Parkway or take the shore road all the way up I'm never very good at names or numbers, but it is the road that goes along the coast and will take you north through some of the beach towns - Atlantic City, if you haven't been there is not much to see - it is still very depressed and except for jumping in and out of the casinos - I wouldn't recommend walking around. I know you will love Cape May - enjoy!

Hi Sandi
Unless you enjoy giving your money don't bother with Atlantic City(IMHO)it's not fun like Las Vegas. It is less than an hours drive via the Garden State Parkway(depending upon traffic).Someone in another post mentioned driving to A.C. along the water, the road is known as "The Ocean Drive"and is identified with little signs along the route featuring a sea gull,it passes through every small town between A.C. and Cape May and may take as much as a couple of hours. As for taking your car, definitely, public transportation in the area is scarce.Enjoy !!!!!

Hello again. Thanks Joanna and Charlie for the information. I wish I had the time to stay in one of those bed and breakfasts, but will be driving back to Alexandria, VA from Lewes, DE after the 6:30 p.m. ferry departure from Cape May. Actually my main destination for this vacation was Washington D.C., and just wanted a couple side trips for something different. After Cape May trip plan to stop in Lancaster and Hershey, PA on the way back home to central Missouri. Don't think I'll try to get all the way to Atlantic City, although would like to drive along the ocean for a while.

Thanks again for all the info.

Sandi

I've done both the ferry trip and the lighthouse climb. Enjoyed both very much. Also, I enjoyed staying in the heart of Cape May overnight at The Southern Mansion, located on Washington Street. You'll enjoy it; its worthwhile to do.
