The Casco Bay cruise (we did the mailboat run) is very calm. It's not open ocean. You shouldn't have a problem. I have yet to go on a whale watch (if you don't count an AK Kenai Fjords trip) but lighthouse cruises are very interesting. Lots of narration. The food tour of Old Port area is fun.

It will definitely take some time to get to Acadia if you detour to see lighthouses but Pemaquid is probably worth it. We stay on I95/295 until Brunswick then go Rt 1. Rt 1 will go thru charming Wiscasset and Camden. Take the auto road up Mt Battie in Camden for an incredible view overlooking the harbor. If weather is good, it's a nice place to picnic.

Lots of hours back to Providence and I95 will get boring. Googlemaps looks like min of 6 hours/no stopping. You missed Portsmouth. Get up early and head there for lunch. You might have time to stretch your legs. Maybe short scenic detour. Our favorite drive is Rt 1B from Strawbery Banke area out past fabulous Wentworth by the Sea hotel. At one point you're on a causeway and can see Wentworth in the distance, Portsmouth Navy prison (in Maine) in the other direction.

Good advice from dfrost. Casco Bay mailboat is wonderful and all in sheltered waters.

I'm so glad I found this sight! Your info is great. I stayed up forever last night researching Boston and Portland.
When we leave Acadia we still have one night left and then fly out late afternoon. So on the way back down I've been told to go to Ogunquit then we still could spend a night at Portsmouth, check it out briefly and still tour Rt 1B. Looks as though we have to be headed out around noon to be safe and return the car etc.
