Here is another vote for Mystic. It's a great little town with lots to see.
Here is another thought. Instead of driving route 95/195 next morning why not try a leisurely drive along route 138 to route 24 to pick up route 195 in Fall River and avoid all that Providence area traffic.
This route will take you by URI campus and over the bridges through Jamestown and Newport and then along picturesque farmlands and waterways in Rhode Island.
It takes a little longer but is far more calmer than driving around Providence.

Last year I stopped at Mystic for the night travelling from New York to Falmouth. Mystic was a great stop over & we didn't want to leave. The only problem is accomodation as most places at week ends only take 2 night minimum booking.
This year I drove New York to Hyannis - stopping for lunch & then at Newport where the drive is much better than through Providence & adds about 45 minutes to the trip if you don't stop. Ignoring stops & 40 minute traffic jam at Sandwich the trip was 7 hours not 5 hours as tripadvisor might suggest. Mystic is about 4 hours out from New York.
