Canoe AuSable

My wife and I are planning a trip to the UP this summer. We are going up from Ohio by way of the Huron Lake coast.

On the way up, we want to stop near Tawas Bay for a short stay with the idea of taking part of a day to visit the AuSable river for some canoeing. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good place to stay.

Would a trip to the UP be best in late June or late July as to weather etc.

Thanks,
jim

If you had any thoughts of dipping a toe or more in Lake Superior (or northern Huron, for that matter), late July would be preferable.

My husband fished the AuSable last fall and we stayed at Gates Lodge. Not knowing my Michigan geography very well, I don't know if that is the area you want or not.

Check out gateslodge.com

First timing - the later in the summer you go the better. In June you will likely encounter black flies. By late July they are usually gone.

As for the AuSable River, your best bet is near Grayling. By Tawas Bay the river is really more of a lake then a flowing river. Grayling has a number of canoe liveries that do an excellent job, my favorite is Ray's.
