Can you take a train from Boston to Gloucester, Maine?
We are traveling over Memorial Day weekend with our son. Going to Boston for a Red Sox game. The other thing our son wants to do is visit an authentic new england fishing town. He wants to see Gloucester, Maine. My question is, can we take a train or some other public
transportation from Boston to Gloucester, Maine?, or do we need to rent a car for a day. Thank you for your help.

Are you sure you mean Maine? Gloucester, MA (in Massachusetts) is the fishing village that the movie "The Perfect Storm" was about. It is a beautiful area. You can take a train but you would be better off driving to see the area. It's very scenic and the harbor in Rockport is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. Check out this link for info from the Gloucester's website.

You can find schedule and info about the commuter rail from Boston North Station to Gloucester on www.mbta.com. Follow the links for the Newburyport/Rockport commuter line. Takes about an hour. $5.5 one way. The train station is a few blocks from the harbor.

I also am assuming you mean Massachusetts.
As with most train stations, there is not much to see right around station. I would call it about 1/2 to 3/4 mile to harbor area, but you really do need to either rent a car or catch a cab to see much of interest.
I would suggest, depending on time and budget, that you rent a car for a day and make a day trip out of seeing Gloucester, Rockport - perhaps have dinner at Woodmans in Essex (used to be better, now something of a tourist trap, but still authentic for seafood - order at window, eat at picnic tables), and walk a beach.
By the time you take the train RT, it will take not much more time (limited trains on w/e) and I do not think the cost will be that great. If you can't find a city location from which to rent a car on w/e, it is an easy connection from Logan to roads to North Shore - so head back to Logan to rent car.

Thank you everyone. I did make a mistake in calling it Gloucester, Maine. Thank you for catching my error. I will discuss the suggestions with my husband and hopefully, we will be able to see the "Perfect Storm" fishing village. Our son loves the movie. Thanks again for your info.
