I am planning to drive from NYC down to Florida. Does anyone know if I can use my EZ-Pass instead of SunPass on Florida Turnpike?

Wouldn't it be nice if we could use these devices in many states. I have an IL I-Pass and last I heard there is some agreement being worked out with other states. Technology being what it is, I would think this is not a huge issue. What a pain in the butt.

It took the State of New Jersey FOREVER to get the EZ Pass system in place on the NJ Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, despite the fact that all of the bridges and tunnels into NY had been taking EZ Pass for several years.

That leads me to conclude that perhaps it isn't as simple as it would appear. Of course, of soon to be ex-Governor is a crook and liar, so perhaps that has something to do with it, as well.

I suspect that the obstacles are bureaucratic, rather than technical.

What I find most interesting about EZ Pass is the large numbers of drivers who don't have it and wait on long lines at toll plazas in NY & NJ, while the rest of us simply breeze through.

The EZ Pass system in NJ was implemented long before the present, soon to be ex-Governor was elected.

It wasn't until recently (around a year ago or so) that the various toll agencies here in the state worked out compatibility for the 2 main transponders (E-Pass and SunPass)at all the toll booths in Florida, believe it or not. You'll still see signs with varying names-- E-Pass, SunPass, etc., but the (Florida) E-Pass or SunPass will work for all. I've heard that the powers that be are working on a nationally accepted pass, but here in Florida that is projected to be about 10 years away...

Florida's priority should be correcting the voting process, not the SunPass system.

They've had 4 years to do that and still expect to have the same "chad" problem as in 2000.

Different states (bridges/tunnels authorities) have agreement to accept other states passes.

No I swear, I can see using it in NY, Penn, Conn, NJ because of the heavy commuting but 1000 miles away? That's a bit much.

But you use the same Visa or Amex card down there, don't you?

As I understand, EZPASS is some sort of consortium of quasi-government agencies joining to share technology & expenses in providing electronic toll collections ... and as the predominant technology now, I cannot imagine any other state trying to "go it alone". So "why NOT Florida using EZPass?"

Because of the close proximity of the other states to each other, it would be beneficial. For example, how many people live in Conn and drive into New York to work?

On the flip side, how many tourists from the northeast travel to Florida? Many on a regular basis.

How many Floridians travel to the northeast?

Wouldn't Florida be getting the short end of the deal?

Lastly, you have to drive through almost the first half of the state to get to the first toll road.

GoTravel - do you actually understand what EZ-Pass is? As to paying use the credit card analogy is best, it is just a small pastic thing on the inside of your windshield. Why shouldn't there be one nationwide (and even through in Canada too) standard? I only felt compelled to respond because I don't understand who would be against this??? If it ends up costing too much, then fine, don't do it, but you're like against it in theory, that is just so bizare.

ps. - In addition to tourists, you have forgotten about truckers and "snowbirds" who use the same car in FL in the winter and NY in the summer.

GoTravel, you are really out in left field on this one. EZ Pass is also accepted at least at Massachusetts, Delaware and Maryland toll stations...and probably some other states as well.
It makes a lot of sense to broaden the system as much as possible. And, I can tell you that EZ Pass shortens the drive from New York to the DC area probably by at least a half hour.
Why not extend it to the entire east coast....or the entire nation, for that matter?
