Camping in Virginia
Our annual tradition is a camp-out on the 4th of July. We usually like to stay somewhere in the mountains where it's a little cooler. This year, we're looking into Shenandoah area, maybe even eastern WV. Any suggestions of where to camp, what to do, and what the weather will be like around then? Thanks!

We camp in Shenandoah National Park every summer. Maker your reservations early, because they do book up quickly. I believe there are three different campgrounds in the park itself. There is also a KOA and a Jellystone Park campground in Luray, just outside of the park.
July is the perfect time to camp there. It's usually cooler in the mountains (although the humidity might still kill you.)

Do an overnighter on the south fork of the Shenandoah River. Rent a canoe from an outfitter in Bentonville, 10 miles south of Front Royal-10 miles north of Luray on Rte 340.
Have them shuttle you to the put in in Luray. Do 12-13 miles first day and and camp out on federal land on left side of river. Chemical toilet on site.
Second day continue on through Compton Rapids (class 2 1/2 and easy) to Bentonville. About 12-14 miles. Take time to swim at the ledge.
Enjoy the beauty of the river and surrounding mts.
