Camping in Outer Banks in Late June--help!!
I posted this message a while ago and did not get a great response. My husband and I will be camping in the Outer Banks the last week in June. We plan on staying at the NPS's Frisco camp site, which is supposed to be a nice site in the dunes. Has anyone been there? Also, does anyone have any camping tips for the OB? How is the weather in late June? What should we do in 5 days (we will be driving down for Massachusetts so we will have a car). Any help would be much appreciated!

Have you searched over on www.gorp.com?
There is usually good information from camping/hiking people posted there. My husband did some hiking around the OB many moons ago about the same time of the year. Biggest complaint was bugs- pack some Avon Skin So Soft lotion. Good luck.

Can't really help you out with the camping aspect, although I suspect late June will have high temps in the 80's and lows about 55 to 65. OB can be quite windy too (which blows sand around, but keeps the bugs in check somewhat).
As to what to see, I've only been once, but my wife & I enjoyed the following. Manteo, site of the Lost Colony (there's a park and I believe an outdoor drama at night). Ocracoke is a neat little fishing village (with a lighthouse), accessed by drive-on ferry, where you can still catch a trace of english accent among the locals. There are of course several lighthouses up & down the OB. I think the Wright Brother's museum at Kitty Hawk is a must see. Northern OB (Duck & Corolla are more laid back, less commercialized, with some good restaurants, names of which I've forgotten--sorry). Finally, if you're adventurous, you can try hang-gliding at the enormous dune at Kill Devil Hill.
Have a great time!

Hey teach, you may be in luck. I've camped several times on the outer banks and even at the Frisco campgraound. I guess it's a pretty nice campground. Theres not much there but beach and ocean. It probably won't be too crowded simply because of the remotness of the island. The beaches are nice and clean, not many people on them. When we were at the Frisco camp, the mosquitos were absolutely terrible at night. I don't know if it an every year occurance or just when we were there. If they are bad there is a campground on the other side of the highway that wasn't too bad. I belive it's close to a restaurant that has a flying saucer looking contraption in the front, you can't miss it. You defintly need to check out the lighthouse. If you're anything like me you will end up spending a lot of time relaxing and daydreaming. Go down to Ocracoke, ride the ferry, see the Wright Bros. museum, etc.. all local flair. Have fun, email me if you have any detailed questions.

We've never camped there, but stayed at OBX several times. There is typically a steady wind of 20-25 MPH - which is why the Wright brothers chose the area for their experiments.
Don't remember too much of a problem with the bugs.
You can veg out on the beach every day for all 5 days and thoroughly enjoy yourself. Other options include the several lighthouses mentioned, the Wright Brothers Memorial, that giant dune, typical beach amusement parks, the wild horses up at the northern end of OBX, off-road tours, the replica of the 16th century Elizabeth II, Roanoke Island Park museum and various productions, the Lost Colony production, the Elizabethan Gardens, aquarium, etc.
Do a search on "Outer Banks" - you'll come up with a wealth of options. Call and get a Tourism Guide.
Don't forget to BRING YOUR KITE!
