If it's coasters you're looking for then there's no question- Six Flags Magic Mountain. Lots of coasters to choose from (Batman is my personal favorite). However, unless you have a pretty tall 8-year old, he/she may not be tall enough to get on some of the more intense ones. I think the web site has the height requirements for each ride. Have fun!

Be sure to ride the two old wooden coasters in San Diego (Mission Beach) and Santa Cruz. In fact, your kids will have fun at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Another vote for Six Flags Magic Mountain. It's got a number of really good coasters. There's also a water park, Hurricane Harbor, on the same property, so you'd have a couple options.

I was going to suggest the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz as well - right on the beach, plenty of rides, old-style arcades where you can play skeeball and other games for tickets and then cash them in for trinkets, miniature golf with a pirate theme, whaffle cones, saltwater taffy... Also, the Boardwalk is walking distance to the wharf which has some great views and some really good clam chowder.

Santa Cruz is a day trip from SF, or if you are driving the coast between LA to SF, it's on the way.

Seaworld in San Diego is fun and so is Universial Studios in LA. There is a Six Flags a few miles out of SF.

I also vote for Magic Mountain. It's huge, filled with TONS of coasters, and conveniently located off the 5 freeway. My favorite is Scream (you'll find it when you get there). However, if your kids beg for Disney, then only go to Disney California for ONE day only. It's only worth a day trip and they have only one decent coaster. If this isn't enough, then you can just pass on the Mouse. Definitely do not miss Six Flags Magic Mountain
