Rob: The beaches are wonderful during the months of August and September. San Diego has a wonderful beach/resort area called La Jolla, Also, try Coronado island - where Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe & Jack Lemmon was filmed. The Hotel del Coronado is not to be missed. While in La Jolla, the La Valencia is a landmark hotel within walking distance of the beach. Enjoy!!

By far the best spot on the California coast between those two area is the entire Big Sur area. Unbelievable beautiful and unspoiled! Don't miss it although August is not the best month there. It can be foggy at times (but it clears soon) and the traffic one Highway 1 is as heavy as it ever gets but still it's the best. Be sure to pull over at the many viewpoints to see the fabulous views...don't just drive slow. Accidents are caused that way cause the road is very curvy and hilly. (I lived there for years).

August is best month for So. Calif. beaches(Sta.Barbara to Mexican border). While we occasionally get surprises, i.e cloudy or overcast days, they are least likely to occur

See pier and beach at Cabrillo Blvd. in Sta. Barbara.
Heading south along ocean? Stop at any of Malibu beaches (Lunch or breakfast at restaurant opposite Malibu pier.

Walk on beachwalk from Venice Blvd. to Washington Blvd. Try the Brown Bagger for Lunch or Dinner at Washington Blvd.
Be sure that you visit Balboa Peninsula and take auto or ped. ferry to Balboa Island, and then the greatest walk at Laguna Beach from Municipal Beach - the gras patch at beach straight south until you give out, the go back along main street just up the hill from the beaches. You can't go wrong.
