Just got back from Sonoma this past weekend. Would recommend Ravenswood which is pretty much in Sonoma. Very pretty there $4 to taste but staff is very good a quite knowledgable.
Benzinger, Beautiful grounds and they have tram tours so you can see them. Looks like they wouldbe crowded on weekends when the weather is nice like Sept is.
Kenwood, great staff lots and lots of wines to taste including 2 sparkling. No charge.
Chateau St Jean is beautiful. Would be very crowded. $5 to tast 5 wines but you can use that toweard any purchase. Also reserve tasting for $10 but no credit. Lots to choose from in reserve tasting.
In Napa:
I know it's crowded and all but we always have a great time at V Sattui. Wines are only available there so purchase the ones you like.
The wineries in Napa are so close together compared to Sonoma.

Favorites of ours in Sonoma are Ravenswood, Kenwood and Souverain. Hop Kiln is a good one too. In Napa don't miss Trefethen, Silver Oak, Clos Pegaus, St. Clement, Folie Aux Deux, and Domaine Chandon (if you like sparkling). A beautiful winery with gorgeous place for a picnic and super nice staff is Chateau Montelena. Wouldn't bother with Mondavi, Beringer, Sterling, Coppola--all too touristy.

Kam,
I've read your recommendations on other posts and they were the basis for our choices last weekend so thank you for that. My new question is: How far from Sonoma is Souverain? We made it to Healdsburg which took and hour and we still couldn't make it all the way up there as time ran out. How much further would it have been? After going to Napa many times I was surprised at how far apart the Sonoma Wineries were in comparison. There is no doubt that the Sonoma wineries were much more beautiful though because of the grounds surrounding them.

Kam et all--seen the postings on Sonoma today-have been mentioning that I was married there etc...the small winery we were married in is called Trentadue-directly across the highway from Souverain...if you like smaller wineries-visit this one-its lovely! And say hi for me...

Ani, Yes I know Trentedue and it's a good one, very small but nice. Suzie, I'm sorry you didn't make it to Souverain--you were probably another 15 min or so from there. There's always next time! Too many wineries to do on one trip. You'll have to come back :~)
