Bywater area of New Orleans

Looking at a B&B in the Bywater district of New Orleans (old upper 9th Ward, west of the Industrial Canal) for a weekend stay soon, and wondering if anyone has recently stayed in or visited the area. I've heard it's becoming a focal point for artists and musicians.

Thanks for any comments!

I've posted your question on another travel site to see if they have any info. I'm afraid I'm naturally skeptical of many areas of New Orleans because of the crime rates there. The heart of the French Quarter is so highly-policed, it's probably one of the safest places in the country. Other parts of NO, however, are really dangerous. Hopefully, we can find out more about the Bywater district.

Sounds good! Two responses:

"The Bywater is a great little neighborhood. Some of the best little eats are out here. The Joint, Sugar Park. Great local bars like the infamous Vaughn's.

Lot's of cute B&Bs' and relatively safe as compared to anywhere else in NOLA.

The worst part about it will be the holyer than thou attitude of the hipster generation (who are recent transplants and not old time southerners).

But it has it all, music, art galleries , great places to eat & drink, so come on out!"

Second response:

Re: Is the bywater district safe?

Yes, the Bywater is the hipster epicenter of New Orleans these days, lots of non-natives live there. The plus side of that is that there is quite a bit of foot and bike traffic there. As to safety, common sense is the order of the day. Walking around is fine during the day. I would cab it in the evenings, but that's just my preference.

Here's a third:

I've walked about Bywater within the last two years, and I felt safe, in fact ignored. My sense is that after dark, it might be wiser to cab it.

Thanks for digging around and finding this. It confirms what I'd heard, and what a locally-based friend told me a couple of days ago. We'll find out!

Spend half a day in By Water. Walking is not bad in NOLA if you can stop and rest every so often. Walk to Lost Love Lounge for a few bloody mary's and then walk to The Joint or JD's for lunch about 1PM or so. Then walk to Markey's and hang out for a few hours. After a few there walk to Bacchanal and have a few drinks outdoors and then dinner at Apple Barrel. You might even feel like going by Vaughn's. Pretty good plan.
