Bugs in Austin
Are there a lot of bugs in Austin (and the suburbs)? I've heard it gets very humid in the summer, so I'm assuming that means bugs. But are the mosquitoes as bad as in Chicago? Also, since it's mild year-round, are the bugs always there? I'd like to plan a trip to Austin, and I'd like to know what I'm in for. Thanks for any help!

Austin has something unique, the Congress Ave Bridge bats. Up to 1.5 million take flight each evening during the period they are in residence in Austin (late spring, summer). They fly out from the bridge en masse on their daily pilgrimage for insects, and draw quite a crowd of onlookers. It's quite a sight! They must do wonders for controlling the bug population as we never noticed any and we visited often while our daughter was at UT.
One word of caution if you are from the north and have never ventured into southern brush, such as what you might find hiking in the Hill Country: stay out of tall grasses and shrubs or if you do venture in, protect yourself against chiggers. Believe me, that's a mistake you make only once!!

Texas' climate is not mild enough for us to have bugs all year round. We do have chilly winterds, complete with hard enough freezes to kill the bugs.
I've never been to Chicago so I can't compare the mosquitoes.
If you're not used to the heat of a Texas summer, I'd recommend coming down between October and May. The months of June through early September tend to be really hot.
And as the previous poster said, the Congress Avenue bats are pretty neat.

Just stay away from the Capital bldg. It houses the worst bugs in the state of Texas. They bite us with more taxes and stupid legislation every year.
Laying all seriousness aside, Austin is a pretty city. Getting more congested every day. About the chiggers (redbugs), you can also add ticks. I have never picked up one in the city but out in the countryside, "whew" !!Spray on a little "OFF" and go where you want. What I like about Austin is the low humidity. Lower than Dallas. Go for it and have a good time. Just stay away from the Capital bldg.
