Broadway Plays
Just returned from a few days in New York with friends. We saw "The Producers" "Proof" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie". Loved "Proof" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie"--but sitting through "The Producers" was painful. As one of my friends said, "The joke was on us!" Mel Brooks knew exactly what he was doing--write a stupid musical about a stupid musical, kick-off the show with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, throw in Brooks' usual off-color humor and they will come.

Actually my friends and I are from a major metropolitan city on the west coast and we have seen plays in London, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. "The Producers" was stupid and Mel Brooks is laughing all the way to the bank knowing he has pulled one over us!

To each his own, but as a long time theatre goer (and holding a degree in theatre as well as years of professional theatre training and experience) I LOVED The Producers. I don't think Mel Brooks pulled anything over on ME, but I understand if his humor isn't appreciated by some people. A lot of people have hated all his movies as well. Not everyone liked the movie of The Sound of Music. Not everyone likes The Sopranos. Not everyone appreciates rock music. So it is understandable that some people don't like The Producers.

I wasn't crazy about the Producers either, I've seen much more enjoyable shows. The music was not at all memorable-no humming a tune after as with other shows. I know the show is going on tour and I think "Peoria and Fresno" should know it's not for everyone. Just like with all awards, a tony doesn't mean it will appeal to everyone and not liking it doesn't make you a country bumpkin. Before you spend $100 on tickets either in NYC or in your town you should know its not for Grandma or the kids and if you don't like Mel Brooks movies then you won't like this. Raunchy rated R and uninspiring.

you weren't humming after the show? i always get "springtime for hitler" stuck in my head and get some very weird looks from people who hear me singing it and don't know the origin (they think i'm some sort of neonazi)
also, i love "when you got it, flaunt it" and sing that too. I loved the producers, but then again, i think mel brooks is a genius.

Perfect example, like the first poster said, people tell you that its good and you don't want to be labeled an idiot so like sheep everyone goes off the cliff together. The second half was better but everyone in the bathroom with me at intermission was talking about how over rated the show is.

Maybe because I have always liked Mel Brooks and his completely off the wall humor, I thoroughly enjoyed The Producers!
And the "raunchiness" was so corny and silly, how could anyone be bothered by it?
I never liked the big Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals , so I am happy to say that on Broadway at least, there is something for everyone!
