Bring a warm coat/gloves to Yellowstone this spring.
It is May 1st and we are in a snow storm in Southeastern Idaho!!! When will this winter ever end.
In Yellowstone the main roads are open but the park service has broken a few plows trying to get all the snow off the road. We have a cabin by West and are always in by May 6th or so.... this year there is still 3 feet on the level on May 1st.
They have had quite a few inches of new snow the last 2 weeks... so if you are coming this May bring your snow gloves, hads and a heavy coat.

Well, the Rocky Mountain west can sure use the moisture we're getting! Hopefully the August fire season won't be so bad.
If the snow doesn't melt all at once and if it rains like it's supposed to in May and June, the fishing and river rafting will be exquisite this summer

Spiro,
The Beartooth traditionally opens the Saturday of the 3 day Memorial Day weekend. This year it's scheduled for opening at 12noon on May 24th.
However, you should always check first to be sure:

Red Lodge CofC, 888.281.0625
The Chamber of Commerce number is the fastest way of checking as long as you call during business hours.
Cheers!

I always say that flexibility is the key when visiting parks such as Yellowstone where what you do can often be determined by weather conditions. Have a plan A, B and even C because you never know for sure what the weather or other conditions may bring. We went over Beartooth Highway at the end of August and a couple of weeks later it was closed for some reason --because of rain (or mud slides or such) for a few days. It took us 3 different visits to the park to be able to finally drive over it. It was enjoyable, but don't let it ruin your trip if you don't make it.

In Idaho they are worried about a big fire year because all the moisture will promote plant growth.

Thanks, Doo. I will give Red Lodge a call in advance and check things out.
Maj, I always have a backup plan. But knowing where, when, and how I am going seems to work better for me. I have been to 20 NP's and I like to plan things out the best I can. I have always wanted to drive the Beartooth, and if not then I will probably change my flight from arriving in Billings to arriving in Jackson. Yes, I know Chief Joseph would be an option also. We are flying out of Jackson, so $300 dollars to change my flight wouldn't be that big a deal if the Beartooth is closed. My first nights lodging is in Old Faithful Inn and last night is in Colter tent cabins in GT's.

Worried about a big fire year in Idaho? Yikes!
Yikes for Idaho and yikes for those of us living in the Gallatin Valley (Bozeman, etc.) in MT. Smoke from central Idaho tracks straight to our valley and gets ringed in by the mountains.
