Boston Hotels for New Year?
Hi,
I am flying from Scotland to Boston to spend from 29th December to 1st January to New Year there for a change.
I am considering two hotels: the Hilton Boston Back Bay or the Doubletree Boston Downtown.
Both are charging around the same price. Is one hotel preferable to the other? Any opinions or any others ( ideally with a pool to relax in after a day sightseeing?)
Thank you in advance for your help.

I would "2nd" the Hilton. It is on Dalton St., a half block from Boylston St. and 3 blocks from Copley Square, the gravitational center of the Back Bay section of town (which is one of three or four main tourist neighborhoods in Boston). Good shopping, restaurants, nightclubs, etc in the area. There are also some upscale residential areas nearby; that whole part of town is young and lively. Copley Square/Boylston St. is also one of the main "First Night" locales (ice sculptures, parades, etc) on New Year's Eve.
Doubletree Downtown will not be as conveniently located for you and is not in as nice an area.

Another vote for the Hilton in December is that by crossing the street and ducking into the Sheraton you can walk through two indoor shopping areas and get to Copley Sq. in comfort! Very important on First Night as it can be very very cold! Be sure to check out the First Night website to see what is being planned:

You'll have a great time.
