This weekend I formed a mini-escape around a friend’s wedding in Cape Cod. I’ve been to the area only twice, so here’s my plan. What do you think? Trying to do too much? Missing a great local fav?

Friday morning –
- check bags at “Pru” hotel (am I using the lingo right?) and leave car for the morning.
- Green line to Park St.
- Join public tour of Freedom trail (90 min)
- Back toward hotel
- Lobster Roll at Jasper Whites or Shipjacks
- Drive to pier for 4:00 tasting at Harpoon
- Late dinner with friends

Saturday –
(What to do in the AM? Boston or Cape? How long is the drive?)
- Drive to Cape
- Be in S. Yarmouth by 1:00 pm.
- Lunch at Captain Parkers for chowder
- Wedding festivities

Sunday –
Open to suggestion. Explore Cape? Back to Boston?
Must be at Logan at 6:00pm

I think you should allow two hours for the drive to the Cape. There should not be a back up at the bridge this time of year.

You won't need two hours to get to the Cape in September, but definitely allow at least 90 minutes.

Don't go to Skipjacks for the lobster roll, Jasper White's will be better and you can say you've been there -- Skipjacks is nothing special. Plus you can get great lobster rolls aplenty on the Cape!

The weather forecast for this weekend is in your favor though it will be chilly on Sunday -- particularly on the Cape. If you have time before your flight Sunday you might want to walk around the North End and get something to eat before heading to Logan -- its really close and you can walk into almost any restaurant and have a great meal (I recommend Trattoria Il Panino if you see it and Cafe Pompeii for cannoli afterwards!)

Actually, you may well need 2 hours to get to Yarmouth. I've driven to the Cape plenty of times in non-peak season and you just never know what's going to happen traffic-wise.

I agree with the 90 minutes and have made it in less but was allowing for unfamiliar roads and unexpected happenings (accidents etc.)

As far as what to do, are you staying in Yarmouth?

If you need to be in Yarmouth at 1 PM, it makes sense to head towards the Cape early and spend any extra time you might have on the Cape going into Yarmouth. At this time of year, you can't anticipate how long it will take -- the weather is supposed to be nice. Likewise, returning on Sunday, you might as well head back to Boston on the early side.

Allow PLENTY of time to get back to the airport. I'm a native, and I haven't been able to find it lately.

I agree with Sandypo pretty much about everything. Yes, you can get traffic any time (especially if people are gawking at an accident, but the weekend after Labor Day is almost always quiet in the Cape and Islands, so you should not have to deal with crowds.

Do leave US 6 (the Mid-Cape highway) for 6A, the scenic Kings Highway, in one direction. Driving back to the bridge on 6A would be a pleasant exploration for a Sunday morning, and it is easy to bail out to US 6 if you spend too much time looking at antiques. You will not believe how close you are to the horror of Hyannis as you pass through quaint Barnstable.
