Book of Mormon

I will be going with my son to NYC for a long weekend in January and we would like to go see the Book of Mormon. I am wondering how large the theater is and what the seating:viewing arrangement is like. I cannot afford front and center seats. So I guess I am asking how far back (and/or up) is it possible to go and still have relatively decent seats to view the play? Thank you in advance for your help!

You will discover that there probably aren't any seats for this January so I wouldn't worry about how far back to sit.

I think it extremely likely that the show is sold out for your dates and the only way to get tickets is to go to a reseller at a very high premium over the face value. Check this out NOW - as in today - in case they have any tickets left at all from the official teller.

You've gotten spot-on advice thus far. Your chances of getting tickets for next month are slim to impossibe, unless you wani to pay a very expensive top price for premium seats.

You all are right! The ticket prices are too high for us. There are seats available through broadwaybox.com, but I won't pay the price. I don't want to see it that much. We will see if there is another play that we both are interested in, then see if there are reasonably priced tickets available, then go from there. Seeing a play this trip is not a priority for us. We are more interested in going to the museums. We have been to NYC twice already and have done a lot of the touristy things (once there in a July, another time in an October). But we didn't go to any of the museums except for the American Museum of Natural History. Plays are not the focus of this trip so we aren't overly concerned about not seeing one. Thanks for the feedback!

Be sure to see some of the smaller museums while you are in the city:

The Morgan and The Frick are both really good.

And the Tenement Museum:

Just returned from NYC and saw Book of Mormon last week. First, it is not sold out for all performances as the others indicated. However, don't expect to be able to get discounted seats - you will most likely have to pay premium prices if you want to guarantee a seat ahead of time. We have always been able to see any Broadway play we wanted (even those sold out months ahead) by getting to the box office the day of the performance with a good book, warm clothes, and willingness to wait in line. What we do is drop by the box office the day before to find out the best time to get in line for tickets to sold out shows. They should be able to give you an estimate of when the lines start for day-of-performance seats. There are almost always a number of "producer seats" (seats reserved for producers to give away) that become available the day of the show. These seats are often quite good. You won't get any discount, you may not be able to sit with others in your group, but you should be able to get a seat if you show up at the box office early enough.
Good luck! Book of Mormon is great if you aren't easily offended!

Let's put things in a proper perspective: If you're will to pay hundreds of dollars for a premium seat. you can get tickets for any show, any time. From a practical standpoint, The Book of Mormon is sold out.

Let's put things in a proper perspective so as not to mislead anyone:
1. If you're willing to spending hundreds of dollars per seat, you can pretty much get tickets for any show any time.
2. The Book of Mormon is indeed currently selling out (and has an estimated $39 million advance sale). The common practice of holding out "house seats" until the last minute does not alter that status.
3. You usually have to wait in line for hours to be lucky enough to get those last-minute seats, as described by the previous poster.....And you have to be extremely lucky. It's not as automatic as the previous poster's comments might seem.

Holding out "house seats" until the last minute does not negate that situation.

Yes, I realize that. I could get seats still, but like I said earlier, I don't want to pay the high price. We really aren't going to NYC this time for shows, but to go to some museums and to just visit with my niece and her husband. Thanks everyone for your comments!

just in case anyone does want to and is able to get tickets to Mormon, i think seats just about anywhere in the theater would be fine. i generally try to get the best seats (not premium though) and had to take whatever was available -- and the viewing was fine. Great show!!

skatedancer is correct. The theater is not that large, so don't be thrown off buying just because the seats aren't in a "prime" area.
