Boat ride on the Potamac & other activities
My husband & 4 children ages 12-17 will be going to Washington DC in August. Can you recommend a good boat ride on the Potomac at night? How about biking...where do you go to find nice trails. Day trips?? We only have 4 days. Holocaust Museum...yes or no? Any other must sees?
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.

Bike riding: there's a great, paved bike trail along the Potomac River from Rosslyn to the airport, then to Old Town Alexandria, and then down to Mt. Vernon. You can rent in Old Town.
Boat rides: again, your best bet in by the river in Old Town, behind the Torpedo Factory, near King Street. Ask anybody where. Several types of rides on the river are offered, and you buy your tickets next to the boat. Schedules are posted.
The Holocaust Museum takes 3-4 hours, and it very serious stuff. Certainly you can go see it if your family wishes to do that. You also need to take time to see the Mall, the Vietnam Wall, Korean War Memorial and the New FDR site. Purchase an Access Guide to DC ... it will give you all the details. Welcome to DC. Ciao

Kam is correct...There is a great boat ride to Mt. Vernon..it includes admission to Mt Vernon or you can just go and ride back....But it is not a night-time cruise...You board near the Waterrfront Metro stop...be careful to actually get off there, the rest of that line is a rough part of town

I would say YES to the Holocaust Museum and NO to the White House, FBI tour and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Spend some time at the Lincoln Memorial and the nearby Vietnam Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. The Roosevelt Memorial is very interesting too, and the lovely Jefferson Memorial is nearby.
You will surely spend one day (if not more) at the Mall museums. On the day you go there, I suggest going to Air and Space first and looking at the day's schedule of IMAX movies. There are several different ones at different times. Buy your tickets for the one you choose and then occupy yourselves nearby until time for your movie. If you choose a 10 or 11 o'clock movie, stay in the A and S Museum. If you choose a 3 or 4 o'clock movie, you can walk across the mall to the National Gallery of Art (probably not high on your kids' list of "things not to be missed") or kitty-corner across the mall to the Museum of Natural History. They have IMAX movies at Nat. History too, but IMO the choice of movies at A & S is better, They sell good pizza by the slice at the cafeteria at the Museum of Nat. History, if it's time to feed your teenagers. They have a nice cafeteria at A and S too.
The bike ride down to Mt. Vernon (or maybe only partway down) is a great idea. We've been having lovely weather for a summer in D.C.--hope it holds up until you get here!
