Has anyone stayed in the Black Mountain area?

I was there this past weekend. I actually stayed at the Haywood Park Hotel in Asheville (highly recommend it); but, I went to Black Mountain for most of the day on Saturday. I ate at The Veranda Restaurant and it was marvelous. Save room for dessert.

My wife was there for a Church retreat a few months ago and loved it. She said it has a great little downtown with some nice shops. Next month we'll be renting a mountain cabin in Old Fort, which is just east of Black Mountain and will spend quite a bit of time there and in Asheville.

I live 45 minutes from Black Mountain, and I love it there. For good food and homestyle dining, try the Red Rocker Inn. Also check out the Folk Art Center closeby.

We stayed at the Red Rocker Inn in Black Mtn. in April. It was very cozy and wonderful food, chef and pastry chef there on the premises. You don't see that alot in small B/B's. We're meeting friends there in Sept for a birthday celebration.

Black Mountain is a charming small town nestled in the mtns about 20 minutes from Asheville. Red Rocker Inn has gotten some excellent write ups. There are lots of shops and galleries to peruse in an about 2 square block area. If you like fairly authentic German food - Berliner Kindl is a good one to try. Many people like My Father's Pizza - I think that's the name - and the Dripolator coffee shop is a great place to have a good cup of coffee and dessert/pastry.
There's a small lake about 1/2 mile walk downhill from town that has a walking path around it with a pool and municipal tennis courts.
The town tends to shut down fairly early in the evenings.

We frequesntly us it as a base for hiking as cabins there tend to be a little less expensive than in other areas. Try vrbo.com. The German place IS excellent.

If you like to hike, try the trail system that begins on the campus of Montreat College- 5 minutes from Black Mountain.
