Birthday vacation in Sept 2000

I will be turning 40 next Sept & I thought I'd better start thinking about possible vacation destinations. We will be taking at least a week. Any suggestions as to places with great weather in mid-Sept? I haven't decided whether to take a relaxing slow paced trip or a on-the-go "let's see how much we can fit in a week" trip. We prefer the outdoors, but a city trip is not out of the question. Thanks in advance for your help!

I like New England in September. In Maine the tourist crowds will be less, but the weather is perfect for hiking. I'd recommend the coast, Bar Harbor, Camden, Kennebunk.

Why not do both! We live near the Great Smoky Mountains which has both the outdoors (hiking, whitewater rafting, camping) and on-the-go (Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge) with all kinds of fun stuff to do even Dollywood Theme Park. The Smoky's have awesome views and great waterfall hikes and you will usually see deer and maybe even a bear. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge have all kinds of shopping, gooney golf, water parks, museums, go-kart places (for the kid at heart)and lots more. I'm 36 and I still enjoy them. The weather is beautiful in September, highs 75-80 and low's 65-70. Where ever you end up, I hope you have a wonderful 40th!!

I vote for San Francisco and the wine country.

I suggest the California coast. San Francisco is a great place to visit with plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities all within an hour of the the city.
