Big Island with Kids
I am looking for a good hotel to stay at with kids who really enjoy a pool. I have been considering the Hapuna Beach but based on some comments, wonder if its the right place. We will also be travelling with two grandparents in their 70s.

JP--I'll be listening in on this one--posted with a similar question a few weeks ago but would still love to hear more reviews and info--hopefully from all you spring break travellers to Hawaii! We've kind of narrowed our choices down to Mauna Kea (sister property to Hapuna), Mauna Lani, Outrigger Waikoloa, possibly a short stay at the Hilton just for the water play for kids. Have you read the reviews and "rants/raves" sections on this Fodor's site--helpful!

MAW - I beieve we've narrowed it down to the Outrigger Waikoloa or the Hapuna Beach. I too thought about the Hilton but sounds like its pretty spread out to navigate with 2 kids and 2 grandparents. Would love to hear from anyone who has stayed at these hotels recently?

We stayed at Outrigger Waikola in early March. Very nice resort with a great sand beach (beaches are not common at many big island hotels). On a sheltered bay with all water sports available. Hotel is updated and friendly. Down side of area is lack of nearby restarants. 17 miles north of Kona. Have fun

We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa with our five-year old daughter and she loved it. Cool displays and art everywhere. Several children's pools and lots of water slides. She loved the statues of horses and other animals in the hallways. It is a large resort but you can take a tram or a boat back and forth between the buildings. There are lots of pathways and places to explore. Dolphin show in the afternoon and you can get in the water with the dolphins if you sign up early enough. A touch of Chinese and Buddhist culture - a sculpture for each Chinese year (year of the horse, year of the snake, year of the dragon, etc.).
