Big Island Hawaii

We are planning a trip to Hawaii this summer. Several questions about Big Island.
I had heard that due to volcanic activity the air quality has been bad recently. Has anyone heard anything about this?

We would like to stay at a resort on the beach for a few days. We aren't super rich. Any suggestions. Laid back is better. Bungalows would be great.l

Has anyone taken the superferry? what was it like? Thanks a billion, Laura and Steve

Because of all the volcanic rock, the Big Island isnt the best choice for a low priced beach vacation. Good beaches lead to higher cost hotels. Many hotels on the Big Island require you to drive to a beach. Fishing, sightseeing, and hiking is awesome though.

Kauai and Maui might be a better option for you

The superferry only runs between Oahu and Maui; it does not go to the Big Island. Too many schedule disruptions to be totally reliable.

We didn't have air quality problems when we were on the BI for a week recently (we were up in Kohala), though we did see it one day. It's not something I personally worried about. Search here for "vog", and you can look up Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or call them if you want further info.

We got a pretty cheap flight on Hawaiian by booking way in advance.

One of the nicest beaches in all the islands is the Mauna Kea's beach. The hotel recently reopened and is offering special deals.

Another hotel on an awesome beach in the Hapuna Prince.

You probably will not find the vog (volcano smog) bad except if you go to Mauna Loa itself. You may find some haze in the air around Kona that will interfere with the sunset views on some days.

As for a beach hotel, the Outrigger in Kona is right next to a great snorkeling beach that is easy for first-timers to use. We stayed there once for a week on a special deal, and found it comfortable and not terribly expensive. It's a great place for evening cocktails to see the sunset, IF the vog is not present. One of the problems with the hotels further north in Kohala is that the wind often comes up off the ocean in the afternoon and it gets too cool and uncomfortable on the beach.

But depending on how long you will be there, consider renting a condo instead. Look on vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner). One of the advantages is that you have lots more living space, especially a lanai (outdoor living room) and a kitchen. We are going next week to a condo we like, for the fourth time. It's right on the water but it is not a beach, as the entry to the ocean is too rocky. But we can sit on our humongous lanai and watch whales and dolphins!! (Whales in summer are not so numerous, however.)

Superferry does not go to the island of Hawaii. It goes between Oahu and Maui only.

Look on Expedia, or the Prince Hotel site for deals on the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Laid-back hotel on a beautiful beach.

FrankS- I'd like to point out that ALL the islands are volcanic in origin!
